Barrow Beyond Borders 2013
The Barrow Neurosurgery international effort continues in 2013. In 2012, surgeons from the world-renowned Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, sent multiple missions to Antonio Lenin Fonseca Hospital in the Latin American country of Nicaragua, with the goal of giving back to the international community.
In the summer, Dr. Randall Porter taught - and learned from - the Nicaraguan neurosurgeons for one week, sharing with them some of the latest techniques in brain and spine surgery. He continues to raise awareness and contributions for Nicaraguan neurosurgery.
In the Fall of 2012, accompanied by his wife and daughter who also volunteered, Dr. Curtis Dickman spent a week teaching and practicing advanced spinal surgery. Neurosurgery resident Dr. James Kalyvas spent 3 weeks in Nicaragua as part of his residency training, initiating a number of educational efforts in the department.
Barrow Neurosurgeon Dr. Peter Nakaji first inaugurated the Nicaraguan site in January 2012. Prior to Nicaragua, doctors from the Barrow were going to Tanzania in East Africa to operate and teach. In 2011, Dr. Nakaji formed a partnership with Hospital Lenin Fonseca, the major public medical center in Managua.
In 2013, several more Barrow neurosurgeons will make the journey to Nicaragua as an annual way to bring our shared medical communities just a little closer together.

Newsflash!
Barrow Beyond Borders Outreach program continues its immediate drive to raise $23,000 to fill and transport a shipping container full of vital medical supplies to Nicaragua to support the neurosurgical humanitarian effort there. We are working in partnership with Project Cure to provide this important resource. It will follow on the heels of an operating microscope donated by the Zeiss company, which is already on its way, to provide the hospital much-needed capability to perform delicate microsurgery. Barrow Beyond Borders International Outreach appreciates the generosity of the Barrow philanthropic community in this effort.
